If you have ever visited Disney parks in Orlando, you probably know that you never know what kind of weather to expect! And if you havenโt been, take it from someone who does know; you will always want to make sure you are prepared.
Orlando is famous for unexpected rain showers. Sometimes, they are just pop-up showers that last a few minutes, and other times, they turn into a full-on rainy day (and certainly not just in the winter!).ย
Because of the unpredictability, we always recommend being prepared when visiting somewhere like Disney parks. Itโs always a good idea to keep a rain poncho in your Disney bag, our family each picks our own Disney bag, and we ensure all our park supplies are on hand and ready to go.ย
Today, we will be taking a deep dive into rain ponchos. We will cover different types and styles of rain ponchos, why it is so important to have a rain poncho on hand in Orlando, and we will recommend some of our favorite choices in various styles suitable for your Disney trip.

Why Should I Buy a Rain Poncho in Advance?
You may be asking yourself, why should I buy a rain poncho in advance? Do I really need it? Well, let us answer that question for you!
As we already mentioned above, rain ponchos are on our absolute must-list of items we need in our Disney bag. Our reasoning is that you will want to be prepared in the event of those pop-up rain showers, and having one in advance will allow you to get protection from the rain right away, and you will avoid the frantic emergency of purchasing one in the parks.
All Disney parks sell rain ponchos in their merchandise stores, but by the time you know you need a poncho, you will be stuck in a long line of others who are looking to purchase one, and you will run into the cost of purchasing that emergency poncho.
Disney ponchos will cost you around $12 per person, and keep in mind Disney ponchos are disposable, so you likely wonโt be able to use them again in the future.
By purchasing of poncho in advance, you can either find disposable options at a much more affordable cost, or you can purchase reusable ponchos and have the ability to continue to reuse them.ย
Rain Ponchos vs Other Rain Gear
A big question that always comes to the surface is, โWhy do I need a rain poncho? Can I not just use an umbrella?โ
Of course, you can use an umbrella, but umbrellas tend to get in the way when you are walking around through crowds and entering and exiting ride queues and attractions.
We have found that using umbrellas never provides the same result as each person having their own individual poncho. With umbrellas, everyone is constantly squishing to try to fit under them, and we all still end up wet and uncomfortable.
Traditional winter raincoats are a little impractical for use in Florida as they are often made from thicker materials made also to keep you warm, unsuitable to Florida’s humidity unless you’re unlucky enough to be visiting on one of Orlando’s rare wet AND cold days, we’d stick with the lighter material of a poncho.
Plus, this is only an “in case of emergency” packing item; we wouldn’t waste valuable space on something that might not get used (unless you’re visiting at the start of hurricane season – then might, turns to almost definitely!).
Ponchos are great as they fold down flat and take up very little room in your suitcase or day pack for a rainy day at Disney.
