How to Plan a Plastic-free Family Getaway to Mexico

Mexico is the go-to holiday destination for Americans, and for good reason. It has a mix of world-class resorts, ancient Mayan history, and loved food. But as our consciousness around the consequences of globalism, consumerism, and travel itself grows, many people are trying new approaches to travel.

It started with low-emissions travel and leave no trace, but now there is a growing movement of plastic-free travel, and Mexico is the ideal place to begin.

Packing for a zero-waste journey

Planning for a plastic-free trip to Mexico starts before you ever head to the airport. One of the most common areas to trip up on is convenience and travel-centric items, like small deodorants, miniature plastic toiletries, and single-use water bottles. Remember, Mexico has public water fountains, so you can take reusable steel flasks (plus this way, it will keep the water cold from the sun). As for other travel products, just travel with what you already own.

To get through airport security, the solid ones are your best option, like solid shampoo bars, plus they avoid plastic packaging and weigh less, meaning everyone uses fewer carbon emissions to transport them.

Taking your own set of bamboo or stainless steel straws and cutlery can be a great idea to avoid the plastic ones you will be offered on arrival.

Selecting eco-conscious accommodation in Mexico

Where you choose to stay is actually the most impactful decision in your sustainability journey – more than what you pack. The hospitality industry in Mexico is currently experiencing some transformation here, and more properties are realizing the branding opportunities for taking part in a circular economy. When looking for the best Mexico resorts, look for those that have transparent sustainability claims.

The most forward-thinking resorts have completely stopped using single-use plastics in their operations, be it the check-in desk or the poolside bar. Instead of plastic key cards, they may use recycled materials; instead of plastic straws, they have biodegradable alternatives. It’s the little things that add up to a lot, and fortunately, making one good decision about which hotel you use can alleviate most of your guilt and concerns from then on.

To go beyond that, you can look at accommodations that invest in coastal health. In regions like the Riviera Maya or Cozumel, some resorts even manage their own coral nurseries or turtle conservation programs. It allows guests to see the environment they are helping to protect by choosing a responsible provider.

Ultimately, a resort’s commitment to a circular economy helps internalize environmental costs that are usually externalized to the local municipality. It means local infrastructure isn’t overwhelmed by tourist-generated waste, which World Economic Forum 2025 data shows averages 1.6 kg per person for each day they’re away.

Dining and hydration without the waste

Food is the highlight when going to Mexican. Its street food is in abundance, but it can also be a big source of waste. The biggest culprit is some of the all-inclusive models, however, which have historically been criticized for food waste. But things are changing. Responsible resorts are now focusing on “honesty in food,” sourcing ingredients locally.

When dining out in local towns like Playa del Carmen, it’s always better to use a sit-down establishment rather than taking food to go. The latter often uses styrofoam or plastic packaging. Though if you are on the go or want to visit a particular night market, you can always bring your own containers and ask them to use them.

Using locally sourced, sustainable seafood creates a powerful cycle, too. Financial success of the seller or resort will be realized by competitors, and it will signal to the market that tourists want ethically sourced food.

Engaging kids in coastal conservation

What will have a long-term return is education with your children – showing them the importance of looking after the environment. Don’t just bring your snorkel from home – explain why it’s not good to buy one on vacation and leave it behind.

Mexico is a great opportunity to learn about biodiversity. There are incredible reefs around, whale sharks, and very clear water to see many creatures.

High-end family resorts are beginning to offer youth programs that are values-based in their learning and offerings, like learning about marine biology. When children understand that the reef they are snorkelling in is a living entity that needs protection from chemicals in traditional sunscreens (always pack “reef-safe” mineral sunscreen), this has a huge pay-off for years to come.

Mexico’s natural wonders

It’s how you interact with the landscape that matters. You will most likely want to see the jungle, Mayan ruins, and indulge in the waters. Leave no trace is an age-old principle to live by, but it’s even more important at sites that are ecologically fragile.

The same advice for choosing a resort also applies to the tour guide. Find ones who clearly care for the environment and aren’t just cashing in. Why Mexico is a great destination is because locals do care, and sustainable options are all around, be it plastic-free or conservation.
