Five of The Best Family Vacation Destinations

Chichen Itza Mexico family destinations

At Black Tomato, we’re always seeking new and exciting ways to experience the world – especially with our families. We know it’s ‘different’, going as a clan – more precious, more complex, more ‘do you remember when?’. But after years of curating entirely bespoke family trips (and embarking on our own family adventures), we know that every family is different. And so is every trip.

No matter what kind of trip you’re dreaming of, we’ve handpicked a list of the best family vacation destinations. And as luxury travel specialists, you can trust that we’ve done the hard work of checking these experiences out for ourselves. Read on to discover a handful of our favourites.

The One for History: Italy

Renaissance treasures, architectural wonders, glittering coastlines. Steeped in beauty and bathed in sunlight, Italy was once the heart of an ancient empire. And on a family vacation to this enchanting land, you’ll uncover as much of its historic secrets as you like – between thrill-packed bouts of sword fighting and indulgent moments of relaxation.

One of our favourite experiences? Enrolling at Gladiator School in Rome. Perfect for keeping the kids (and adults) entertained, this is an educational (and extremely fun) way to uncover the history of these mighty warriors. Stepping into the arena encircled by the Eternal City, you’ll get a dash of sword-and-sandals action as you learn the ancient discipline of gladiator fighting. Swords and shields in hand, cameras ready.

Leaving this ancient world behind, we’d highly recommend heading to the beautiful terracotta skyline of Florence. Cruising along the calm waters of the Arno River at sunset, glide beneath the bustling Ponte Vecchio adorned with jewellery shops and watch as the earthy-hued cobbled streets fill with locals completing their evening ritual of promenade.

Now, for the cuisine. Creamy risotto with hints of citrus, sweet coffee-soaked tiramisu, and the iconic Margherita fragrant with fresh basil. From learning the art of making fresh gelato together to sampling gastronomic delights at every turn – with every step, you’ll uncover the best restaurants, eateries, and gelaterias in town wherever you wander.

Here, there’s a little bit of everything, for every family member. It’s infatuating and intoxicating – and you won’t want to miss it.

The One for Adventure: Iceland

When we think of Iceland family vacations, adventure naturally springs to mind: that and its striking natural beauty. Quad biking across the vast Reynisfjara black sand beach, descending into the heart of dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano, snowmobiling atop glittering glaciers, and hiking beside the thundering waterfalls of Skogafoss and Seljalandfoss.

It’s an incredible place (and one we know very well). With unusual landscapes and mesmerising experiences, budding and experienced explorers alike will feel the pull of such surroundings – the desire to discover and be thrilled. And we’ll show you it all.

Whether lit by the endless daylight of the Midnight Sun or the ethereal hues of the Northern Lights, Iceland is always captivating to behold. No matter the time of year, there’s a wealth of experiences to be had here.

One of our favourites? Snorkelling between tectonic plates at Silfra. Diving into mesmerising clear waters, embark on an adventure of a lifetime as you weave your way between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Carved by nature, filled with wonder.

When it comes to Iceland family vacations with the little ones, it’s unlikely they’ll be able to take part in all the activities. Instead, Iceland is ideal for older families – and something to look forward to for when your little ones are a bit more grown up. We promise it’ll be worth the wait.

The One for Wildlife: South Africa

Sand-dusted wilds, bright city lights, and a glittering ocean brimming with rainbow-hued coral reefs. The list of why we love South Africa goes on. And on. A land roamed by cheetah, lions, antelope, black rhinos, and hyena – the wildlife here is second to none. You won’t want to miss it.

Incredible scenery and wildlife experiences await in South Africa

Family vacations in South Africa are filled with those once-in-a-lifetime moments, whether that be swimming with sharks or embarking on your first (or second) safari.

Watch as your kids’ faces light up with excitement as you head out in search of black-backed jackals and local meerkat colonies. Or whales and penguins. Whatever your preference, South Africa is the perfect place to experience the thrill of the natural world – where wilderness and wildlife blend in effortless harmony.

From cosmopolitan Cape Town to mesmerising Sabi Sands, family vacations here are adaptable for all age groups and dynamics. Snorkel, dine, hike, and abseil to your heart’s content.

The One for Variety: Mexico

If we had to pick just one word to describe Mexico family vacations, it would be ‘vibrant’ – closely followed by ‘relaxing’, ‘bold’, ‘colourful’ and ‘venturesome’. This is a place where you can do as much (or as little) as you like.

Enjoy the spectacular white sand beaches of Riviera Maya, Mexico

You could relax in a traditional hacienda hidden amid the lush thickness of the jungle or you could swim alongside a vibrant flock of 2,000 flamingos. Or you could do both. Learning about ancient sacrificial rites, you’ll weave your way between dangling jungle vines to uncover the white-dusted Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza.

Next, to the coast. Unwinding on the white sand beaches of the Riviera Maya and exploring local shops and chilli-scented eateries – here you’ll experience the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and vibrant culture. Bathed in sunlight – and refreshing tranquil waters.

Whether you’re needing a break with the little ones or seeking a multigenerational trip to remember, Mexico is perfect for families of all ages and dynamics. The thrill-seekers and the sun-seekers. The history buffs and the wildlife enthusiasts. Rest assured, there’ll be something for every member of your clan.

The one for nature: USA

Home to a dazzling array of striking national parks, the USA boasts countless natural marvels and dramatic landscapes wherever you look. Just as vast, however, is the variety of trips on offer here.

Combining a visit to one (or several) of these flora-and-fauna-filled wonders with any type of trip makes for a breathtaking escape. Whether that be city breaks, road trips, beach vacations, or wild west adventures.

For families from the US, your next adventure could be on your very own doorstep. Tantalisingly easy, a staycation means that everything is at your fingertips. It’s deciding where to go that’s the hard part. But not to worry – below we’ve handpicked two of our favourites.

Dramatic nature at its best, Yellowstone National Park, USA

We couldn’t not mention Yellowstone and the jagged mountains of Grand Teton National Park. Where steaming lakes recede into petrified forests and brightly coloured hot springs meld with snaking rivers and colossal canyons.

These beautiful national parks set the scene for an exhilarating family getaway. Horseback ride through tranquil alpine meadows, seek out free-roaming moose and wolves, or white-water raft down the raging rapids of Snake River. Or all three.

Some of the more thrill-packed experiences may be best suited to slightly older families, but there’s nothing quite like the feeling of venturing off the beaten track together – no matter your family’s ages. And besides, it’s always nice to leave something for next time. And it won’t be long until you hear the call of wild once more.

Now you’ve discovered some of our favourite family vacation destinations – and there’s plenty more where that came from. This is just a selection to spark your interest and leave you dreaming of distant (or not-so-distant) lands. Your next family adventure awaits. Where will you wander?
